My friend has been vego since she was about 12, and even so, is a bit overweight, even though she exercises and everything. The thing is, she is embarressed to tell people because they sort of snigger and say yeah right. It’s so cruel.

What do you think?

Funny you say this because most of the vegetarians I know are a bit overweight too. Shows that you need to do it properly with fruit and veg, and not just cut out mean (and eat crap).

What has not eating meat got to do with being overweight, what you think they just leave the meat off their plate and starve themselves do you. Your friend should be proud of herself for having the courage to be different.

their carbohydrate intake is very high

You shouldn’t be judging her, you said she is your friend. Good friends don’t b i t ch about each other.

FYI I’ve seen a lot more fat meat eaters than fat vegetarians.

I think they are pretty funny. They waddle around like little fat penguins, lol. Cuz they eat like nothing, but they are still overweight, lol. This section even has a poster who is overweight, her name is franscesca or something like that. She is a fatty, lol. Most of the vegetarians i’ve ever seen have either been REALLY fat or REALLY frail and skinny. I’ve not met 1 person who was nice and healthy and attractive looking.

um..she onli eats veggies so how can she be fat..by eating unhealthy junk food. It is cruel but evry1 should treat her like normal. Is this friend you? lol

Vegetables and Fruits have calories and sugars just like every edible food. Being a Vegetarian does not mean you will be destined to be thin and fit. You are still a human and everybody gains weight differently. The body turns food into what it needs, and stores it when it’s needed.

I don’t see the embarrassment about this, since she should not be taking wisecracks by ignorant people -so seriously. She should just gain some knowledge about her Vegetarian life so she can educate the people who attempt to make fun of her. If all else fails, she can simply ignore them.

No need to be cringe , vegetarians are also fat .
There are several veggies which makes you fat , like
potatoes and other veggies which contain a lot amount of
starch and starch contains carbohydrates .
Carbohydrates make us fat , that’s also one reason .
Another reason is any food ; you have extra you get fat .
Any ! Just don`t have extra food otherwise it will make you fat .
One more problem can be , your friend may not eat a right amount food ,so that’s also a bad . If you have less food , that make
some kind of gases in your stomach and your stomach
simply swells . it may cause problems too !
There must be any reason from these three reason !
Check it out !!!

She may not be getting enough protein and healthy fats in her diet. I find most vegetarians I know who live on refined and overly processed foods are overweight. She may also be somewhat insulin resistant due to eating too many carbohydrates. A vegetarian diet does not automatically mean a healthy diet.

Weight Watchers has a new program that is vegetarian friendly if your friend is wanting to shed a few pounds.

to :) of course you have seen more fat meat eaters than vegetarians….if you go to a football back that has 98000 fans from one team and 2000 fans from another team itseasier to spot more fat people in the 98000 than the 2000

wahoo10001  on December 27th, 2009

I think nothing out of the ordinary about them. Some people are just heavy.

btwnrain  on December 30th, 2009

I’ve never met an overweight vegetarian

anon404  on December 30th, 2009

she obviously just eats a lot of junk food.

I am a former chef and a lacto ovo vegetarian and overweight, vegetarians are not uncommon, I am one myself, I have a very high metabolism and am a diabetic also, some people do not process foods as well as other nor burn calories, and a diet of fruit, veg, grains and non meat product can still add or pack on the pound, it all depends on your body and how you process the foods, I could go on a bread and water diet and still gain weight, as my system seems to process all food into starch’s and then stores them as fat.

It is not a common thing, but overweight vegetarians are not to be scorned or loathed, but it happens to all diet, you see very few overweight Chinese and Indian people but there are some, it is just a way of life for some people.

people are so stupid. so what if some one is overweight and you can be vegan or vegetarian and still be overweight. there is genetics that can play apart too. tell her to ignore the people and be proud that she is doing something for the animals.

=)

She probably eats more sugary foods as eating veggies often gives a sugar craving
more protein like a spoonful of P. butter or other nut butters should help the craving

There could be lots of reasons. They could eat the wrong foods, they could have thyroid issues, they could have a metabolic disorder, they might not get enough physical activity, etc. People come in all shapes and sizes regardless of lifestyle choices. As a child I was vegetarian and due to pancreatic issues was advised to eat a high fat diet. Obviously that lead to some extra weight for a while. People that bother her just need to chill out and learn to value diversity.

I’m an overweight vegetarian. LoL. I lack the willpower to exercise. I’m about 30 pounds overweight. Hey, eating pasta all the time isn’t good for you. =)
