How Overweight Men Can Reverse Erectile Dysfunction

HealthDotCom asked:

Urologist and erectile dysfunction (ED) expert Ridwan Shabsigh, MD, explains how abdominal obesity is associated with low testosterone, which in turn causes ED. Weight loss can make all the difference—even without pills, says Shabsigh.

I am 53 and work out regularly. I was diagnosed with low testosterone and since using gel my libido has improved and I have lost 1 or 2 inches off my waist.
I noticed as I got older it was harder to keep the fat off my gut.

More lean muscle and less fat tips the hormonal odds in your favor; more T, less E.
Will it help fix it? It depends. If it’s mainly a drop in sexual desire or function, getting fit will help. When we feel joy in moving our bodies, it’s easy to share that joy with others.
Find a diet and exercise weight-loss program (not a fad diet) and gym. It’s good to figure out ways to enjoy your new life habits; figure out how to have fun, love healthier food, and keep a steady gym partner or 2.
Good luck!

Your doctor is the best person to ask. But he might be too busy with paperwork, so I’ll give my best educated not-a-doctor answer: maybe. Be sure to keep a reasonable program of weight loss. Starvation does *bad* things to lean muscle tissue, such as your heart.
If you diet and exercise well, you will likely raise your energy, confidence, stamina, sexiness, and also sleep better (less sleep apnea)…. (con’t)

I guess I meant to ask: will losing a lot of fat–say 30 lbs–by dieting and exercise increase a man’s testostrone level?

solomondre  on February 14th, 2010

eswyatt: Most of the time, if you supplement a fat man with testosterone, he’ll still be fat; but if he changes his behavior and loses weight, he might not need supplemental testosterone. If he still does, then it’s painful but easy enough to fix: regular deep-muscle injections, maybe some side effects.

It’s generally unwise to look for a drug-based solution first, instead of changing behavior. Even if it began as a hormone problem, behavior change is necessary to correct the whole system.

Doesn’t this create a ‘chicken or the egg’ problem? If one is prone to having fat around the waist because of low testerone, it seems that losing weight is only removing a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself. You still have low testosterone.
